INDIAN RUNNERS OF PAWSAWHYL
It is my dream to see the magnificent colored runner become the strongest most loved variety of waterfowl in Australia.
These ducks are the most wonderful animals and probably the most famous all over the world.
Featured in The movie 'BABE' the white runner has become a backyard pet again in recent times, but the colored birds still struggle to get a strong hold.
I set out In about 1998 to breed colored runners.... Not being able to find the birds any where but knowing most have them had been bred at some point i set out on a journey of love and below is the results of this journey...
The seasons have been difficult over recent years with drought so entrenched no water for the birds or the feed crops it has become a very difficult time for breeders of waterfowl..... i have placed many colored runners into pet homes and to breeders in hope that my years of breeding will somewhere set there seeds and again flourish .....
Before me came a few breeders of colored runners and the ones that have influenced me i am eternally grateful to. for without there assistance encouragement could not have achieved the remarkable results i have done in so few years.... i am eternally grateful to Mrs Doris Loates, renowned Geelong Waterfowl Judge and breeder of Indian Runners... her care and love of this breed has encouraged me no end.
Take a look at my runners and get encouraged.... the colored runner is truly a character of the poultry world and truly like the runner in 'Babe' these ducks can speak to you......
Enjoy...........

I breed my first Apricot in 2005. Chasing this attractive color which is known all over the world was a task. However encouraged by friends i continued and he line i breed today is the resulting factor. These pictures were taken of my birds on show at the Victorian Waterfowl Association annual show in Melbourne 2007.
The color should mimic the color of the Saxony water fowl, however the eye lines of the Saxony are not to be present. If the eye lines were present then these birds would be Saxony runners.

Developed as the first color of Indian Runner and the most common color in Asia these birds are Fawn.
My original Fawn came to me as a retired bird from a breeder who originally purchased the lines of Mr John Eccles of NSW.
A few years of selective breeding has resulted in very nice type in my fawn line.
My Fawn ducks have won many best colored runner in show and also best light waterfowl even beating the whites.

The latest arrival into my waterfowl yard is this pair of Fawn and White.
It is very difficult to purchase lines in Australia that carry good marking genetics... we will see what we get from this pair this season....

Cinnamon Runners originally brought into my yard from South Australia the ancestors of these birds were breed by Mr Murry Guy.
It should be noted that many Cinnamon birds are breed with the Harlequin and often shown as Harlequin.... The white cheek patch in the drake and the true even cinnamon in the feathers of the duck are the true feature of the cinnamon runner.

Resembling the Welsh Harlequin water fowl, The above two birds are Harlequin runners.
Similar in appearance to the Cinnamon the two colors are clearly different... the drake has no cheek patch and the head is a glossy green black. The duck is Darker in the wings and does in fact take on the characteristics of the Welsh Harlequin.

The Silver Runner....... Taking a look at the silver Appleyard gives the image of this color of runner. Breed out of my original Cinnamons this color separated into this line of birds.... I bred this color true to type for 5 generations before space in my yard made me give it up. I still produce the occasional silver runner. Once you have the silver gene you always seem to have the silver gene....

Because i could and because it had never been done i thought the runner lines in Australia should enjoy the changing plumage of an eclipse moulting bird.
These remarkable birds i developed by crossing in a Dark Campbell. 7 years of breeding and 9 generations latter my Dark Campbell runners resemble the Exhibition runner in type and the Dark Campbell duck in color.
Winning Best Waterfol in Show with one of these ducks has been the highlight of my showing career ...those who have spent the time and endless devotion to developing something from scratch will appreciate the reward of these birds doing well on the show bench.

Black Well what can one say about Black except when you get Black coated in a beetle green sheen, coupled by type....the black runner becomes a show stopper..... a reasonably popular color the black runner is often seen on the show bench.

Very popular once this remarkable bird has lost popularity and is now difficult to find.... The Cumberland Blue is a very pretty runner and needs some real enthusiasts to figure it out and begin breeding these birds again... I will add these two have not been hit by a bus, they just didn't like the flash on the camera....as such they wouldn't stand....
Coming soon are the pictures of the other colors we have at Pawsawhyl....... Chocolate...... Trout......Mallard.......and White (yes we have some white ones)
